Supervisory development
Supervision is literally the act of “seeing over” the activity of others. In early history, a supervisor’s function was much less complex. He or she was primarily regarded as an “overseer” both by labor and by management. The “job” was quite simple then: carry out “orders” from above and if the people below don’t produce, fire them.
Well, most of that has changed now, and changed for the better. The old autocratic “boss” is no longer effective. Today’s worker has different needs, works for different reasons, and is more affluent and aware than ever before. Today’s supervisor is looked upon as a coach, motivator, team leader, and human resource specialist. Competition, technology, and economic conditions have forced us to realize that our most valuable “resource” is human resources.
There is a “New” supervisor in today’s business to meet the challenges that face us. Today’s supervisor thinks in terms of effectiveness, excellence, return on investment, and profitability.
To meet today’s challenges, you must ask yourself some difficult questions: Am I the best I can be? Do I provide goal directed leadership? How can I meet the needs of my people while satisfying the needs of the company? Am I effective as a supervisor? Can I become more effective? How? These questions and more will be answered in this supervision program. This is more than a “learning” program…it is a “becoming” program. In this program, you will focus on your many roles as a supervisor and how you can effectively “become” a better individual and a better, more effective supervisor.
